HI everyone just to let you know that due to weight loss i have made the decision to wake up Barney. He's had a bath and a drink and has already eaten. He'c currently stomping around his enclosure and enjoying sunbathing lol
woohoo!! :dancingbanana: great

glad you woke him and glad he's doin good

Great stuff Wendy. I bet you are feeling much better now. So how did you think your first hibernation went. I think you did really well. Next year will be less stressful now you have done it once. I think the first time is always the worst. One of my margies is awake. She had nearly hit her target weight. I was keeping an eye on her. Went to check her before i went to bed and she was trying to get out of her box and was wide awake. So i had to get her up. Was running around trying to sort her cage out. I didn't get to bed until 3.30. It's great when they wake up and you know they are ok. It helped me this year because 2 of mine were being over wintered. Next hibernation when they are all asleep i don't know what i will do with myself.
Hi i was a nervous wreck the first night and was up and down checking on them all. I think i was checking them too often at first but Sue (wizzamum) calmed me down and made me think tortoise
Next year i will use soil rather than shredded paper and hopefully will slow down weight loss.
I really missed my 3 and have been sat watching Barney for ages. The other 2 are still asleep they were heavier going down so will hopefully go a bit longer (Barney went 7 weeks).
Hope you are right and next year is less stressful lol
It will be Wendy. I think the first time is the worst because you worry so much in case you are doing anything wrong. Now you have done it next time you will be ok. I have been watching mine too. It's hard to believe that they have been in hibernation when you see then running around.

You needed to be doing it in the good old days when no-one told you about ideal temps etc How the ones that survived did, is a miracle, but it helped with doing it properly ever after

Thats true Sue, my mother in law has been hibernating her with no prob for years and thought i was mad when i was putting mine in a fridge

When you tell people about putting them in a fridge they think you are mad. My brother in law asked me if i had to thaw them out lol.

A guest at my daughters party once told me I was cruel for using a fridge and that she was going to report me lol . I asked her what she would do, her reply was that she always had torts as a kid and they went in the airing cupboard. I nearly fell off my chair. I asked her where they were now and she said a lot died in hibernation and it was because they were in a different country and the air was different here and they were probably old anyway

My daughter promptly changed the conversation and has since given her some leaflets despite her no longer having any torts.
Amazing isn't it!
Tort keeping as certainly come along way. Thank god. No wonder so many died before.
