just an update
Weve had our princess now for a month, spur thigh,
shes doing realy good and loves being handled and her baths, she gets a mixture off food from weeds, flowers, veg, and watercress and kale, she seems to love broccoli i only give it to her once a week. we are growing our own flowers that we got of ebay.
all she seems to do is eat, i may be feeding her to much, as shes growing fast.
we are thinking of getting another one but would like a cb05 or cb06. i got princess from carlisle tortoises he breeds horsefield and spur thighed, could anyone recomend any other breeders, i dont want them to be related thats why id like to get one of someone else, id also like a male. is it safe to keep two together?

Hi there
I don't think you will get many breeders who will sell a tort to put in with imported ones. Carlisle torts sell many imports. What does yours say on the certificate as country of origin? There is a list of breeders on this site and alos at Tortsmad.com

Bet he didn't tell you he was investigated and they showed him on TV a while back lol
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7355729.stm Unfortunately there are a lot of fibbers out there - the bit about artificially propagated is standard on the article 10. She may be wild caught but either way she will be carrying foreign pathogens so I would get a poo sample checked at your vets for parasites as some foreign torts carry pathogens which will render home bred torts quite ill or worse.

Hi Emma
Oh bless, don't get upset about it as there is nothing you can do and so long as you know, you can take steps to take precautions with it.
Lots of people on the forums have bought from him. I don't know the outcome personally but as is the case with all possible wild caught or imported animals, it is a good idea to have them vet checked or at least ask if they can do a faecal sample for you to test for all parasites. There is not a lot a vet could tell you just from looking, what is going on inside without doing extensive tests with bloods, swabs etc as torts often take a long time to show illness and a long time to recover because of their slow metabolism.
It's the loopholes in the law that have allowed people to start importing again. It was stopped in 1984 but since various countries have joined the EU it has meant that the law was flawed.
It's fine to keep her but do make sure the children wash their hands thoroughly after handling her. Some pathogens are not transmissable to humans but others are and it would be quite possible for them to catch worms from her if she has them, so I would keep an eye out for that too.
You ask if it is a bad thing to have an imported tortoise and I would say it is bad because they are expected to adapt to a differnt lifestyle once they have come from the wild and also the conditions they are imported under are not good. Many die and many become ill later, also for everyone sold at a pet shop there is a space for more to be imported in its place. It's not your fault though as you did not know this.
So long as you follow the advice given on forums such as this, you should be able to offer your tortoise a decent life from now on.
Hope this helps
Hiya,
I'm so sorry to hear that you've been given an imported tortoise. I have an import myself and I do notice a HUGE difference in his behaviour. He is much more 'wild' thinking than them and has grown at a fantastic rate (he's really smooth) However, hindsight is a wonderful thing, and if I had the choice to go back, I wouldn't have purchased him. Simply because I would be supporting the wild caught trade.
There is nothing you can do now except look after him really well, which with a little bit of advice you will be doing. Your care for him sounds fantastic, but his diet does need changing a bit for him to thrive. The broccoli isn't good for him as it inhibits the uptake of calcium. I'd also cut out the veg and stick to wild flowers and plants as this is the most natural diet for him.
Did Carlisle tortoises specifically state "I bred him myself"? If so, and it turns out he was actually bred in turkey, then he has purposely mislead him and I would get in touch with your local citizens advice bureau, or your local consumer rights advisory place.
Don't be upset- many WC tortoises do well in captivity, but you just have to keep in mind that he may have gotten ill through the transport methods used. I'd get your vet to do a fecal check at the very least.
Josh
All your information is really good, Thanks you are all, lovely people
Yes he did say he breeds them him self as my husband asked him if he made alot of money out of it as he had LOADS of torts, he stated he dose make money about 2-4K a month but he said thats because he breeds them himself and he has no overheads.
ive been talking to someone from the living rainforest hes got a spur thigh thats for sale also from turkey im realy intrested in getting him as the one ive got is from turkey. i just dont want her being alone.
but im going to wait and see what the vet says on friday about princess first before i go down.
she realy dose seem okay the only thing ive noticed is when im giving her a bath the last few days her wee has been white not chalkey though, but iv read that its okay.
if you did get another you'd still have to keep them seperate for a year, this is the main reason i only have 1 tort. i dont have the space to keep 2 apart for a year
