Heres a link containing a list of weeds tortoises eat. http://www.tlady.clara.net/TortGuide/Diet.htm#plantlist

Theres some things you can get from the supermarkets, such as watercress and wild rockets, but most of it, if not all can be found or grown. Heres a link to seeds you can get online.

At the minute there will only be a few weeds around, but if you only have a tiny tortoise then there will still be a few round to supplement the diet. In the winter if I have tortoises up that aren't hibernating for a particular reason, I find the best salad bags you can buy is florette crispy. It has some of the more nutricious leaves in, and whilst it's not advised as a staple diet, it is 2nd best when there is none of the good stuff around. A tortoise will not thrive on a diet if fed this year-round, but it is an O.K substitute when nothing else is available. Remember to keep an eye on the amount you feed her, as she is a russian she would be hibernating for a LONG time, and during this time she wouldn't be eating. With this in mind you should feed smaller amounts, as much as she can eat in 30 minutes and then take it away.

Kale and Sprouts are very high in oxalics which inhibits the uptake of calcium, this isn't a very good food-stuff for that reason, however, lambs lettuce and little gem are O.K for the winter time, just to bulk up the amount of weeds you can get your hands on.
Hi Bazam i went on your web site http://www.shelledwarriorsshop.co.uk/tor...g-90-p.asp and bought some weeds of you for £10.20. There is a load of weeds so i am going to look in the freecycle for a old tin bath to grow them all in for her. She will love these to bits. I can not wait till i receive them for her, She has already gained 6g in a week.
Bazam doesn't own the shelledwarriors shop, but a lady called Sarah does.
Can tortoises eat the leafy parts of bamboo plant? I have so much in my garden, it would be im plentiful supply if they can.
Hi Tommi,

Bamboo leaves aren't suitable for tortoises... I believe they contain cynaide but don't quote me on that one. I do know that the are toxic though and shouldn't be fed.

Hi Everyone,

Tortoise eats many types of food. It depends what kind.
Most tortoises are desert animals, which means what they can find in their natural environment.
Usually hay, grasses and more grasses. Some are also given romaine lettuce on occasion. Mustard, collard, dark greens etc.
Buy a book on what type of tortoise you have to fully and completely know what's good for them and what isn't good for them.
Or you can Google "typeoftortoise care sheet/diet" and you should get some results. However, some sites aren't that great, so unless it's a professional site, I would just buy a book..

Lettuce isn't that great for tortoises, nor is it natural. And pellets are sugary so I avoid them.
