I took my inherited old lady tommi to the vets today, as I was very unhappy about her state of health since she came out of hibernation on Saturday.
tommi, had severe pneumonia, was blind in one eye and going blind in the other, as well as being severely dehydrated. After much crying and soul searching, I made the decision to take the advice of the vet and let her go back to sleep so that she wouldn't suffer anymore as she was in alot of pain. This was a result of many years of bad husbandry by her previous owner.

I would like to thank Josh and everyone at tortoise world for all their kind support over the last few weeks. It has been greatly apprciated.

I am SO sorry to hear this Sad I really wish I could have done more to help you with her. She was a lovely tortoise, and she had a very caring new owner.

Hi really sorry too Sad thinking off you take care x
I am so sorry tracey. She was a beautiful tort and a very caring mum. Thinking of you xxxx
Thankyou to everyone for all your kind words regarding tommi.
i have learnt so much from all of you - it is such a shame that I wasn't able to put it in to practise looking after poor tommi.
I am going on holiday next friday, and whilst away, i have given my son (21) lots of websites to read. we are going to discuss on holiday the possiblility of getting a hatchling. I need to know that my son will support this as due to my age (45) he will be in on the long term as will his children one day. I also want to make sure, that everything will be in place i.e tort table, heating, lighting and everything else so that we are fully prepared. My husband didn't realise what being a tortoise owner entailed, however, like my son said, poor Tommi didn't give us the best example and rearing a baby will be all down to us.
I hope you don't mind, I will be printing off pics of all your lovely ideas to put in a folder along with all the tort trust etc literature for us to look at when we are in a better relaxed mood on holdiday.
Thankyou all once again.

Sorry to here about Tommy, Always sad to loose a pet. I have a little tort called Miya, I rescued her from an owner that didnt give a damn. She also has Pneumonia Dehydrated, Blind as both her eyes where very dry, she didnt even blink, she also lacked calcuim and vits 6 weeks later and lots of Marbocyl, The pneumonia has almost cleared up,she still on the antibotic eye drops with an oil in it and she is getting her sight back in one eye. So fingers crossed
Do you have the name of the eye-drops being used?
Its a Gentamicina based mixed with acetilasteina, The vets at work made it up for me, I have to put them in every 5 to 6 hours, The name of the drops is SOLIGENTAL.They are working really well...
Glad to hear they are working well. I was asking because I have heard of maxitol (sp?) being used a lot recently and it is a very strong mix that I wouldn't reccomend for a torts eyes, it has caused lot's of torts to suddenly become allergic to things as simple as sand and soil!
