if tortoises are out in the sun most of the day in the summer how long do they go under a basking lamp when you bring them in?

is it 10-12 hours in winter if you are not hibernating ?
Hi April, Yes! you try and mimic the weather for them. I also leave the lights off with no food once a week, we call it there rainy day.(individual choice) They to have access to water and cuttle fish 24/7.
mine gets up and about without light and lamp in this weather, i get up in a morning and he's sat on the food dish waiting lol.
its that hot in my house i dont bother with the heat for very long, just a hour or so.

would you have a rainy day for young torts(
4and a half months old?)
Hi April. I don't but it's like Kay said it's everyones choice. I would leave their lights on for 12 hours a day if you are over wintering them.
sometimes though my heat is off as with the heating being on my house is very warm i just have the lights on all day and the lamp for a few hours

Remember though that house heating will not warm a tortoise to the desired temp, it still needs a basking lamp. At normal house temps it will not warm up enough to fully digest it's food Wink
i have the lamp on for a few hours a day still, he only goes under it for half hour then goes far away from it

That's because he has reached his functional temp. If he were to sit under it all day he would cook, but it still needs to be there to give him the choice to be able to thermoregulate. The 'choice' is the key with tort keeping.
sometimes i do leave it on all day, but if i go in the room and its roasting then i turn it off for a bit.
