Hi i have tried for over an hour to contact a vet that will help me but the only thing they want to do it put my George to sleep. I want to try and save him, he was hybernating in a large woodern box with a lid but a rat got in and has injured his front legs and one of his back ones. I have bathed him but i dont know what else to do. He is trying to use his front legs and his back one is working fine. Any advise on what i can do to help him would be greatfully recieved. Like i said i really want to save him if i can. He is looking at food but not eaten anything yet, but Patrick (my other one also hasnt eaten anything. I got him in too as i didnt want them to get hurt anymore. Thanks kate
Hi Kate, so sorry to hear about your poor tort, wish i could give you some advice, all i can think of is to keep him warm and comfortable untill you can locate a good vet willing to give him the chance to get better.
He will probably need antibiotics for any infection from the rats bite. Sad

Where are you Kate? Some vets do not realise just how well a tortoise can recover from such injuries. I have one that was chewed by a fox and lost a back leg and the owners vet said she would never recover - she is fine now though. You just need a good vet to assist - an area will help us to find you the right one. Meanwhile used an iodine based wash to clean the area. If you have nothing like this then use a strong boiled, cooled salt solution. Keep the tortoise very warm and dry. If covering wounds then use a none stick dressing or coat with calendula cream to stop sticking - all very difficult late at night I know. Feel free to email me on wizzasmum@aol.com and I will see if I can help.
Good luck

Do not use normal substrate - keep on newspaper or towels (with no fabric conditioner or detergent on them). Can't add anymore than what Sue as told you. Don't worry about him not eating just yet. What you need the most is a good vet. I hope you find one. Let us know how you get on.
