I'm not being pedantic here, but wonder how it could make the room roasting. If the room is so hot that it is affected by the lamp then it might be a good idea to re-site the tort table. It really is important to have this option avaialble as keeping torts relying on ambient temps is not really condusive to their best health. Are you checking temps under the lamp on a regular basis as something does not sound quite right here tbh.

Hi Maz. Can't you turn your heating down a bit. Torts need the choice like Sue said. If not i would move your tort table.

RE: advice please
right the heating is on almost all day as i have small children in the house and have no option of turning it down, this is what makes the room roasting, when the room is hot he doesnt tend to sit under the lamp and the lamp is on for around 5-6 hours a day and yes i check temps. generally its on for few hours in a morning then few hours later on. sometimes its on all day.

Hi Maz. Just keep an eye on the temps under the lamp then. As long as he as got the choice he should be ok. Some torts bask more than others.
